Afghan authorities continue to call for international support amid the country’s fight against a worsening coronavirus crisis. On Wednesday, officials in Kabul announced that Iran has donated thousands of coronavirus tests kits to Afghanistan to help the country contain the spread of COVID-19.
A shipment of 2,000 test kits has already arrived in Afghanistan, with 3,000 more expected to be delivered soon.
The delivery of test kits and necessary medical items followed talks between Afghanistan’s foreign minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif.
The Afghan government is facing numerous difficulties and shortages in battling COVID-19. Locals here believe any move towards attracting foreign help is important and necessary for the Afghan government in order to limit the spread of the disease.
Iran is already offering medical services to Afghan immigrants in Iran who have contracted the disease.
According to Afghanistan’s health ministry, the number of people infected with the novel coronavirus has surpassed 1,800.
According to Afghan officials, Iran has also announced its readiness to keep all its trade borders open for Afghan businessmen to import vitals goods, mainly flour, cooking oil and medical equipment from Iran, to reduce economic pressure on local Afghans caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.
